The National Institute of Statistics (INE) organised a high-level meeting in Seville on 27 and 28 November on “Integration and interoperability strategies for the modernization of official statistics”, as part of the activities planned under the Spanish Presidency of the EU.

The International University of Andalusia hosted the meeting at its headquarters in La Cartuja, which was attended by the presidents and directors-general of the national statistical institutes of the European Union, as well as the director-general of Eurostat.

The members of the European Statistical System (ESS) exchanged experiences on integration and interoperability at this forum. They also had the opportunity to discuss how to continue making progress in the modernisation of the ESS, taking advantage of the data spaces and the benefits of having common standards.

Experiences and discussions

The meeting began with the presentation “Gathering Data: Data Spaces Enabling Data Integration and Interoperability” by Carlos Torrecilla from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre.

The presidents of the statistical offices of Lithuania, Austria, Portugal and Poland then led three sessions: the first on “Experiences in data integration”, the second on “Improving data interoperability”, and the third on “Towards an integration and interoperability strategy to modernise official statistics”.

After each session, group discussions were organised and a moderator then presented the main topics discussed in the session to the plenary.

The president of the INE, Elena Manzanera, closed the meeting by listing a series of follow-up actions to continue making progress in the modernisation of the ESS within the spheres of data integration and interoperability.
